What To Consider When Purchasing Best Cage For Your Hedgehog

The best hedgehog cage should always be a safe, spacious environment for your hedgehog to thrive.

Material

Hedgehog cages come in a variety of materials including wire, wood, and glass. These cages come in a variety of sizes as well, some taking up more space than others.

Size

Some hedgehog cages on the market are too small to house a hedgehog. The bare minimum space for hedgehog enclosures should be at least 2x3 feet or 6 square feet. Ideally, you can provide 8 square feet or more, and the bigger, the better. It should have enough room to fit an exercise wheel, litter box, a sleeping bag or nest box, an eating area, and any or all the accessories you may have.

Wire Cages

If you are considering a wire cage, be sure to check wire spacing to safely house hedgehogs. Depending on the size of your little friend, the spacing should be 1 inch or less to prevent hedgehogs from getting their head stuck in between or babes from escaping.

Never use a cage with wire floors as this is bad for hedgehog feet and could lead to disfigurement, pain, and disease. Instead, use soft cloth liners or plastic bottoms with hedgehog-safe shavings.

Glass Cages

Glass cages can be a great choice for many owners as it is reasonably priced. It is also smooth, so you don't have to worry about your hedgehog getting injured as you would with the wiring cage or escaping. Not to mention, they are also a safer choice for a chewer.

If you are going to choose a glass aquarium, it should be at least 30 gallons in volume.

Wood Cages

Wood cages are not recommended as they are not easy to clean and sanitize. However, hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means they do not like bright light. Therefore, providing hiding places using materials like wood, cardboard, or cloth bags will provide your hedgehog with a hiding place from the light while providing privacy.

Plastic Containers

Many hedgehog cages on the market have a metal wire frame on top and a plastic bottom. This type of cage can make a large cage more affordable, lightweight, and not rust.

DIY plastic containers have also been very popular among pet owners. You can use a large plastic storage container and make some modifications to meet the hedgehog's needs, and it will save you some money compared to the alternatives.

Single Or Multi-levels

Multi-level cages allow more room for a hedgehog without taking up extra floor space. However, hedgehogs have poor eyesight and can fall and injure themselves.

Having a tiered house can greatly reduce the ground space a cage might take up and can be a fun way to home your hedgehog, but they also can be more challenging to set up and move and potentially dangerous to your hedgehog.

If you are considering a multi-level cage, ensure it has safe, covered ramps to prevent your pet hedgehogs from falling. The balconies or tiers should also not exceed six inches for the same reason.

Add-ons

You will want to check and see what all the cage includes. Some packages include food bowls, a water bottle, hay racks, and even toys. Others have add-ons like cage dividers, lids, or fleece linings.

Easy To Clean

The best hedgehog cage should be easy to clean as the cage will need cleaning frequently. You should remove all feces, urine, and uneaten food daily with some spot cleaning if needed. An entire cage will need a deep cleaning with water and soap weekly to keep your hedgehog healthy. Otherwise, they are susceptible to health problems like skin irritation.

To make cleaning easy, look for features like removable trays, sufficient doors or lids to reach inside accessible, and removable parts like hay racks and water bowls.

Safety

Safety should always be your first priority. Ensure the hedgehog cage has high sides to prevent escape or a suitable lid. Hedgehog cages with smooth sides, like glass terrariums, are great at preventing escape. Also, make sure the cage does not have any sharp edges that can injure hedgehogs.

Ventilation

The best hedgehog cage should be properly ventilated, not only so that your hedgehog is getting plenty of fresh air but also to prevent odors from building up. Mesh or screen lids or sides are sufficient for glass or wood habitats, and wire cages provide ample ventilation on their own.

FAQs

How To DIY Hedgehog Enclosure?

For DIY options, you can use aquarium tanks or plastic storage containers or bins as long as it is large enough to house a hedgehog safely, but make sure there is plenty of ventilation. You can cut a large opening in the storage container's lid and attach mesh or screen material to it. Many owners have gotten quite creative with DIY enclosures.

What Kind Of Bedding Material Is The Best?

The best bedding material includes shredded paper, recycled pelleted/absorbable material, and wood-shaving (aspen or untreated pine).

Avoid using corncob as it can grow mold when exposed to moisture. It is best to avoid dust shaving and cedar shaving as they can irritate your hedgehog's eyes and respiratory system.

Does A Hedgehog Need A Companion?

Hedgehogs are solitary animals and do better individually. When housed in a group, fights can occur.
